Perception : It is what you see.

To give you an example..  This Blog, as the title says, is “My View of the World by Joe” and as such it is my view of things based on how I perceive them…  I will admit that I am not a journalist.  I do not go racing out to the news so that I can ask people questions, such as “how did you feel when you saw the man murder your daughter/son/husband/wife/brother/sister/whatever”…  What I will do is read up on it and then give my view, based on my perception, of what is reported, and then try to make sense of it, and maybe ask a few questions…

Maybe I will get you to change your perception of things, and maybe I won’t but, either way I hope to get you thinking about it..

Most of my material, as you may have noticed, comes from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune at HT.com and my favorite source for thought is from Tom Lyons…  both are rather liberal, though he seems to have more common sense that the average liberal..

So, today I want to talk about the two party system that we have, and how they are perceived…

Since this article is about perception I will not try to convince you that these accusation are anything more than SOMEONES PERCEPTION.

First the Democrats….

Democrats are often seen as trying to make themselves more appealing to the criminal element and illegal immigrants by continually trying to give illegal immigrants rights and privileges reserved for legal immigrants and citizens…   making it easier for people who are not supposed to be here in the first place to get social services, vote and go to our schools..  In some states people with out documents can even get special driver’s licenses.  The Democrats continue to tell us that it is wrong to make someone prove they are themselves, by use of a picture I.D. , when they go to vote in an election…  Think about the number of places you have to show an I.D. to do, or get, such as the Pharmacy, travel through an Air Port, getting money from the bank, or to cash a check at the store.

Some people would go so far as to tell you that since we have Law Enforcement agencies to protect us there is really no need for us to own firearms, and that the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

means that the right to bear arms is reserved for the government..  The myth of “to serve and protect” started by the Los Angles Police Department has been busted by a number of Police Chiefs who have said tha the purpose of their departments is NOT to protect us from crime but to response to criminal acts…  They advocate the creation of more Police type organization, armed of course,  that will have heavier and heavier firepower than the citizens..  If you don’t believe me just look up how many organizations have police powers..  I was surprised to find out that is some larger cities the Post Office has uniformed police patrols…  The POST OFFICE?  I was watching the Animal Planet on Comcast one day…  There were armed officers getting in cars clearly marked ASPCA…  They have Police powers?

Check out the number of Police Departments in New York City where they seem to have a cop for everything..  Sanitation Police anyone..  Do they shoot the people who litter or don’t recycle?

All of this is really a matter of perception but it does some times seem that the left is trying to give more rights to the people who are not supposed to be here by taking them away from those of us who are here legally…

Now for the Republicans…

They talk about people taking responsibility for their actions and how it is up to the individual to make his way in the world…  not the governments job…  This is often seen as an attack on the poor.  The Republicans are more inclined toward free enterprise with the idea that the government is responsible for helping people create their own wealth and by not giving it to them..  When President Obama talked about the man who had his own business, and how he had done it himself,  he put his foot in his mouth, maybe he just did not say it the way he ment to, by saying that man had not done it by himself as the government had made the roads and all those things that helped him build up that business…  If you watched the video of his speech President Obama seemed to be saying that the Federal Government did all the things that allowed him to build his company..  Like what?  The Roads?  Even the Interstates are not build by the Feds..  Sure the Federal agencies put the roads on a map but they give this map to the states who obtains the needed land, purchase the road beds, and then hire private contractors to build the roads that the people pay for with the federal gas tax, which the Feds had out like it was THEIR MONEY.  It would not be the job of the Federal Government to make his company for him but, they should at least be able to help keep a business landscape that enable him to build up that company..  himself.

When it come to business interest the Republicans are seen as caving in to the interest of BIG BUSINESS, sometime to the detriment of people’s interest.  Down here there is a constant fight between people who want to have controlled growth, so that we do not out build the roads, water, or services, and the people who want to just allow builder to put anything anywhere..

If you listen to some Republicans you will hear about how to current government regulations hinder the various corporations in the conduct of their business..  Take the Deep Horizon disaster, or the recent financial collapse..  Both of these were covered by government regulations but both happened, and that includes the great PONZI scheme of Bernie Madoff, while government was supposed to be watching but wasn’t.  So before was talk about cutting back on the regulations, some of which are there to ensure a safe environment, lets make sure the regulators are doing their jobs with the tools they have…

So, yes, this is about perceptions..  There are, as the saying goes, three sides to any story..  Mine, yours, and the truth.  It is up to us to discover what that truth really is and the make sure we elect people who are more interested in our interest than they are at getting re-elected.

It is afterall a Government “by, of, and for THE PEOPLE“,  not “by, of, and for THE CORPORATIONS”.

Thanks for your interest,

That Joe Guy.

Honest Banks are as hard to find as a Sasquatch.

Bank
Bank (Photo credit: 401(K) 2013)

In the last couple of years, since the financial crash of 2008, I keep coming to the conclusion that, yes it was the bankers.

Sure the Flippers were making money by inflating the value of property, so they could resell it at the inflated prices.  Sure there were appraisers who verified that the inflated prices were normal while getting money from both sides.  Sure the banks knew, for some time, that this was going on but, the housing market was flush so, who would suspect that all these worthless mortgages, the ones that the banks bundled up and sold to other financial organizations, would one day deflate and cause a vacuum that would reach around the world.

Not the bankers, who had made money hand over fist.  They tied to get all of their loans back by upping the rates on other people’s loans, and in some cases causing the failure of more mortgages.  As the tremor spread, and the bankers found their landscape riddles with sinkhole mortgages, the wanted to get the holes filled.  They could not, of course, go the the very people they were now foreclosing on so, they went to the people they had helped put into office…  The Politicians.  The controllers of the Federal money mill.

There was an argument about whether to give them a bailout, or not.  It soon became apparent that to deny them the money would only hurt the people who worked for these organizations, and not the people who made the disaster.  It was then decided to give the money to those institutions that were “too big to fail”.  This did not mean that they could not fail, as the were indeed falling on their faces, it only meant that their failure would create even more havoc on the financial world.

A couple of months after this all started to come apart there was an article in the Sarasota Herald, the same paper that had warned us about flipping, and some the the people who had been doing it, telling about an interview with a woman who worked for the banks.  It seemed that her job was to give seminars to local law enforcement and train them about how to detect people who were trying to defraud the banks.  Yes, they already knew there was fraud afoot but, since they were making money off of this fraud, they did not care.  It was only when it became apparent that this fraudulent inflating of the property prices was now jabbing them in the butt that they took notice..

They got some of the holes filled in, with the bailout money, but that was not quite all of the holes.  They then started mass foreclosures as there were more people now, having lost their jobs as their companies went out of business due to the collapse cause by the banks, who could not pay their mortgages…

One of the results was that they could not foreclose fast enough, some people said that the faster the homes were seized and resold the faster the market would recover, so the banks, and their agents, started what has been called “robo signers” where the NUMEROUS Vice-Presidents at the bank, some of whom just started working there, were verifying large numbers of foreclose documents.  Document they indicated were correct, and accurate.  This in spit of the admissions, by some of the signers, that they signed so many of them that the had little, or not chance, to either verify the information or even understand it.

These foreclosures, and the fraudulent filings, got so bad that some of the Judges began to notice, and some even reacted by slowing the rate of foreclosures.  Since then the Sarasota Harald has written that those caught with fraudulent information, instead of getting censured and their case dismissed with prejudice, were told to go back and refill.  Lets say to student, the banker and the student, both got caught cheating on a test…  They both swore that their answers were accurate and their own but, the teacher discovered that they had both made up their answers, in the hope the teacher would have so many test that he would not pay attention to theirs.  The regular student gets a failure grade and a trip to the office while the banker gets told to re-write his test minus the false answers.

Back to the falsified information inserted into court documents…  Some of the banks have gotten fines for this… though probably not many…  So what do the do?  They list the fines as “expense of doing business” and take it off the taxes, so the taxpayer is now bailing them out AGAIN.

Is there any surprise that Jesus tossed the “money changers” out of the church, or that he would feel that way about them?  NO..

Most of us have to take responsibility for out actions but, if you are a banker, who gives large campaign contributions, not so much..

If the average person where to do what the bankers have done he would be hounded into jail.  If anything happens to the average banker, such as a fine, he just gets the taxpayer to cover it when he takes it off his taxes as an “expense of doing business”.

The small business man who drives his company into the ground loses everything while the banker just gets the taxpayers to bail him out and his company gives him a big bonus…

Why is it only the small guy who has to be responsible?

Thanks,

That Joe Guy.

Scams

It is probably just me… but when I see some add that offers, say a hat, for free it seems that all I would have to do is tell them where to send the hat…  Sure there might be a shipping fee, for the cost of sending the hat.

If I see an advertisement for a free hat, with the purchase of a vehicle, I understand that the price of the hat is the cost of the vehicle, and they could have written the ad to say something like”free vehicle with the purchase of a single hat”, and that would be just as truthful.  That would, of course, make for a really expensive hat.  They like to use the word “FREE” as it then seems that you are not paying anything for the hat, or whatever.  More truthful would be to say “at no extra cost”.  That doesn’t give the same impression though.

Then there is the offer of a free gift card, or maybe an iPod, iPad, or other expensive product, and all you have to do is answer a few question in their survey.  So you click on it, and start the survey.

They ask a couple of simple questions, a survey that might be useful to somebody, and then maybe the have you pick out the product you want.  That done you go to the real point of the thing, the survey, for real?  There is usually a disclaimer that says something like “participation required”.  What they mean is that when you are picking between all the wonderful things you might be interested in, or not, if you want the product you picked out then you must subscribe to several of their offerings.  There are normally several different column, much like chinese food menus, from which you must pick a specified number of offers.  That is a scam.

If you have to buy something then the product is not free.  This is less honest than a time share luncheon, where you have to listen to a sales spiel to get that free lunch, which is why it is often said that “there is no such thing as a free lunch“.

Is this the best Meter Reader job in the World?

In Sarasota, Fl., for several months there has been an ongoing argument about parking meters, and whether they will hurt downtown business.  It is an effort to make extra money for the coffers of the city.  Here is another idea..

I recently noticed a video clip story on MSN.com which told how the city of Bonn, Germany had placed meters on the streets of the city, or a least certain parts.  Now these are not parking meters, and they are not aimed at people who park in these areas.  These meters give out a receipt for all night at 6 Euros a night, and are aimed at the street-walker who ply their trade in Bonn.

It seems that, prostitution being legal there, they decided to make a little money off the street-walker, and to do  that they placed meters on the streets to charge the ladies 6 Euros a night to ply their trade.

Having been to Korea, in the 1970s, and Germany, in the early 1980s, I understand that other countries view prostitution a little differently than we do here in the U.S. where prostitutes are often viewed as victims of the sex trade.

In some countries prostitution is seen as an industry and is governed as such.  Here, in the U.S. it is still seen as a crime where the prostitute is the victim.  I don’t really know about that, and will not make a judgement on it, but I will say that since the people of Sarasota seem to place so much importance on money, by this I refer to the way they treat homeless people, or the introduction of Stoplight Cameras, I wonder if this might be something they might consider.
