Westboro Babtist Church? Even Crazy People have Rights!

After the bombing of the Boston Marathon I became aware of the Westboro Baptist

Even Crazy people have the right to FREE SPEECH.
Even Crazy people have the right to FREE SPEECH.

Church, in Topeka Kansas, which is not, as far as I have read, connected to any real church, Baptist or otherwise.

The church was started in, or around, 1955, and probably began spewing it’s hate and ignorance soon after.  The group seems to be under the spittle drenched command of a Fred Phelps who’s message of “GOD hates FAGS” shows a really poor Christian message and a certain amount of “poor white trash” intellect.  You can see them at their  website www.godhatesfags.com.  It is kind of like going to the ZOO and watching the animals sniff each others buts.  So who are they, and what is their message?

Who they are seems to be the family of this Fred Phelps and may only be about 50 people strange.  In that way they are insignificant.  Their message of hate is where they become important.  Yes they have a right to free speech, and yes their speech says a lot about them..  Lets look at some of it..  “GOD hates FAGS”.  On the face of it you might think that is just a statement of fact….

So lets look at the words…  Take GOD…  You might assume that they are talking about a specific GOD, as in “The One True God” but, since different religions have different Gods you might wonder of they are talking about Set, Zeus, or Jehovah.  I am not sure at this point…  because what do they mean by “hates”?  Is this “hates” as in they displease him, or upsets him, or are they talking about a real hate here where he wants to rub therm out of existence?  To me it seems they are making “judgements” of their own.  Are they not worried that their God might get upset that they are taking one of his rights, as in “judge not lest ye be judged”?  It is obvious that they are NOT talking about a Loving God who allows “free will” in order to let humans decide which direction they will follow and wants people to do what is RIGHT.  Personally I would not see myself lining up behind their god.

Then, of course, they use the term “FAG”…  Which is a provocation, as in “provocative speech and gesture”, which would tend to indicate a limited vocabulary..  I might not be one of the sharpest tools in the toolbox but, at least I can use words, other than slang, to get my message across.  For example, I might have said “JAHOVAH DISAPPROVES OF HOMOSEXUALS“…  In reality I would only go as far as to say that he does not approve of Homosexuals, Gays or Same Sex for you people over there on the left.

My belief, and what I have been taught, is that a persons religious values and beliefs are personal.  While it is perfectly with in each persons rights, both religious and civil, to act as Witnesses  for their beliefs it is beyond their rights, Christian wise, to make hatred laden judgements against people who do not share their beliefs.  If you do not like Gays it is within your rights to not associate with them, it is NOT within your rights to usurp the judgement of Jehovah, that is his right to make these Judgements.

Now, lets get to their message about Thank God for” the bombs, or the shooters, or whatever…  If any God were to do what the Westboro Baptist Church had said and used indiscriminate mass murder to get his message across this would not be a God of love but, one of HATE and so not worth worshiping….  These people believe that God, whichever one they mean, is using these people, bombers or shooters, to punish the United States because a portion of out population wants to let Homosexuals/Gays/Same Sex marry.  This is stupid.  Not everyone agrees that the Institution of Marriage includes two people of the same sex.  It has been said that our “Freedom of Religion” can also be construed as our “Freedom From Religion” and that the Untied States has separation of church and state so that we will not have the kind of religious law that the first settlers came over here to get away from.  Our law are supposed to be about what is good for Society and NOT about the Church…  Do some of our law fit under both categories?  Yes.  If the founding fathers had wanted to make Religious law they might have codified the “10 Commandments” rather than the “Bill of Rights”.

If Jehovah had wanted use these killers to make a clear statement about HIS hatred wouldn’t he have used them at a “Gay Pride Day” event?  Why would he attack athletes?

Wouldn’t the death of our soldiers overseas more likely say that Muslims are evil rather  than that the country that uses the motto “In God We Trust” is evil?

My point is simple…  The God that the Westboro Babtist Church glorifies is a god of hate, and not one of Love.  For those of you who do not believe in any gods, it is simple, they are just a bunch of lunatics, for those who do believe in a GOD you can make up your own mind about these people..

I can’t really imagine a world, such as ours, that came into existence by just chance, so I would prefer to believe in one who either Loves us, or doesn’t care but, I would NOT like to believe in one who preaches HATE…  so I believe that these people, who seem to indicate that indiscriminate murder is an act of god are crazy and that brings me to the main thrust of my article……  Even crazy people of “Freedom of Speech”.

Thanks

That Joe Guy.

Will Muslims now bow to Paris Hilton?

I don’t think so.

This will show you the kind of thing I do not pay attention to…  Paris Hilton.  On the other hand I like a little humor so, I was thrilled to see an article, online, that Paris Hilton, who knew she had stores, was opening a new store in Mecca.  It seems she recently announced the opening on Twitter, according to CNN.

Her announcement quickly prompted others to voice their displeasure and accused her of ‘insulting Mecca’. “It is unnecessary to have her shop here because we do not need it. If it was in our hands we would have closed all of her shops in Saudi,” said Sheikh Adnan Baharith, a conservative cleric, who preaches in Mecca.

He is redundant but, I get his point..  Nobody NEEDS Paris Hilton or her stores.  They don’t have to shop there.  It seems that she has opened a store next to the Grand Mosque and maybe they are afraid that the first “suicide bomber”/”religious warrior” to hit the store will damage the Mosque?  Maybe they are afraid that people going to the Mosque will be compelled by Satan to go inside and purchase the decadent products, probably made by Satan himself, and thus be corrupted.

Of course this leads me into the question of “free will”.  I don’t know about Allah but, Jehovah gave man free will.  All through history government bodies, whether it is tribal or a country, have passed laws that they saw as needed for the good of their group.  The first type of these were most likely put forth by the tribal shaman/holy man who gave them the force of religion in order to make it clear that there will be punishment.  The most widely known laws of this type are the 10 Commandments, which Jehovah gave to Moses.

Why bring up “free will’ in this context?  Free will means that each person has the ability to decide for himself about what laws he will go by, or ignore.  If there is no free will then each person would be set upon a course, life, that they do not control and therefore his decisions are made for him and what he does, either good or bad, does not really count.  How can a person be judged either good or bad if he does not have control of his own actions?

So, with free will each person is accountable for their own actions and, if they decide to purchase product from Paris Hilton, it is on them.  If there are enough devout Muslims then Paris Hilton’s store will fail.  If the store makes a profitt then maybe they, the clerics of Islam, should do a better job of teaching piety to their flock, rather than trying to stamp out their choice, which would mean nothing.  For good to matter there must be evil, and maybe the opening of a Paris Hilton store, next to the Grand Mosque, might be a good thing.  It would all depend on how fast it goes out of bussiness.

While I don’t particularly care about Paris Hilton, or her stores, it might be that a store with out customers would say more about Islam than a bombed out store.  One would speak of piety and tolerance, and the other would place them on the level of the Taliban, and others, who stone rape victims and hang 7 year old children for being CIA spies..  or who destroy ancient sculptures.

Thanks,

That Joe Guy.

What is it with these people?

“I’ve struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God,” Mr. Mourdock said. “And even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.” So says Richard Mourdock, a Republican Senate candidate from Indiana.  What is he really saying?  Is he saying that Jehovah intended the rape, or that Jehovah used the rape as an excuse to make the woman pregnant?  The phrase “they walk among us” comes to mind.

Then there is Todd Akin‘s remarks that “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

I can see where Republicans would be against abortion but, I can’t see where they would be coming up with blatantly stupid comments such as this.  So I ask, again, “what is with these people”.

I understand that our politicians seem to have an aversion to the truth but, can’t they at least think about what they are saying BEFORE they say it?  I can’t even imagine what it is like to have ben raped, and don’t want to know, and I CAN NOT conceive of a God who would INTEND someone to experience that, or who would leave her a pregnancy that would forever remind her of that experience.

If the voters elect either of these two morons I would have to say “you deserve the kind of government that YOU elect”.

Personally, if I one of these bozos was the only choice my party put of for an election I would have to vote for somebody, anybody, else.  I would love to be able to, in good conscience, vote my party but, there are limitations on STUPIDITY that should not be exceeded, and these guys have gone way past that..

Thanks,

That Joe Guy.

Florida Presidential Primary : Who to Pick?

It is Primary day here, and here I sit trying to think of whom to cast my vote for.

The first one I crossed off my list was Newt Gingrich…  I would have to say that my choice there was only partially religious…  He cheated on 2 out of 3 of his wives, and that is just what we know of….  I am not a right wing Christian wingnut, so why do I say my choice is partially religious?  Maybe Newt was married in front of a Justice of the Peace and the word “God” was never mentioned, in which case maybe he did not LIE to Jehovah.  Then again…  I believe they still say things like “in the eyes of God”, or “before God”, so, as far as we know, Newt has lied to Jehovah God at least twice.  Then how are we supposed to trust what he says.    So he is out.

Mitt Romney : Newt has pointed to Romney’s control of the Damon Corp. and it’s large fines for ethics problems, and Newt would know about ethics problems, having be bounced from the House Speaker jobs for his problem.  One that even a Republican Majority could not ignore.  So the question about his comes down to the amount of control that Romney had over Damon.  Was he doing day to day control of the company, or was his interest just in getting it into shape to sell.  At Bain the idea was to take companies that were not making money, on the virge of failure, and turning them around.  When he was in charge of Damon, I don’t know how familiar he was with that operation or if he know that those practises, the ones that resulted in fines, were wrong, or if he was just getting rid of dead wood.  Newt makes it sound like Mitt was running thing on a day to day operation, rather then getting it ready for resale.  The whole idea that Bain could get a company, that was not performing, ready to be bought by another company and not hack off the parts that were not making money is rather strange.  After all, if you were looking to buy a company would you rather buy a healthy company or a company that was only standing up because of crutches?  Would you pay more for the healty company, or the one you would have to fix?  Me?  Not that I would ever have to make the choice, I would rather buy a company that I did NOT have to fix.

People will, it seems, look at these question through the filter of their belief: is Mitt Romney honest, or is he a greedy slug who just wanted to cheat medicare.  Mitt said he was one of the people who helped clean up the mess at Damon but, no one else seems to know about anything he did to fix anything.  Again, it is hard to decide this question.  It seems to me that either the Feds thought that he had nothing to do with it, as I don’t know of anything they have charged him with, or if they just could not prove charges and so did not level any.

Ron Paul :  He is a libertarian, which means he is not a big government liberal, and he is not a big bussiness syncaphant.  People would either love him, or hate him.  Ron Paul would probably get rid of a number of government agencies that DON”T carry their weight…..  One of these would be the Department of Education…  how maany schools do they run… and how many teachers do they have?

I would take aim at the guys in charge of the Federal Highway Administration.  What do they really do?  You think of these guys as the ones who build the Interstates but, the closest they get to this is telling the states where to build the Interstates.  If the Feds want to put in a new Interstate they tell the State DOT where to put the road, and the the STATE goes out to get the property, the right of way, and then gets the road built.  The USDOT/FHA does not even get it’s feet dirty.  They just hand out the money, which they often threaten to withhold if the stated does not pass laws that the USDOT want, but does not have the authority to pass.  Take the speed limits.  Feds have said that if a state does not have and enforce  a speed limit that the FHA likes then the feds will withhold highway funds, so the state can’t build the highways that the FHA wants.  This money comes from, at least one source, gasoline taxes.  Each state get back a certain about of money, as determined by what the Feds feel is needed.  That means that some states will see a less than a $1 comeback for every $1 they send in, while other states will get more than $1 for ever one they send in….

There are any number of ways that we can slime down the government, and do away with departments that just take up space…..  Did the Army Corp. of Engineers so such a good job around New Orleans?  How about the Securities Exchange Commision investigating Bernie Madoff?  How about the guys who were in charge of keeping an eye on the Deepwater Horrizen?  The did a BANK UP job.

Ron Paul might just make the world appreciate us more, when he pulls us back into our own borders.  Once the worlds whipping boy takes our marble and come home, maybe they will realize just how much they need us.  Maybe then they will understand that WE are not the source of THEIR problems…

In the mean time….  I am going for RON PAUL..  I think he will do the least damage.

Family Values? Newt Gingrinch?

Family Values
Image by 37 °C via Flickr

Figuring which Republican would be the best President is rather hard.  In this day and age it seems to be expected that they will lie. You might have the political ad that “mostly” tells the truth, with the main thrust of which is said to be a falsehood.  The there are the ads put out by these groups who hide behind Action committees which are totally false.

The paper today tells about how it is estimated that Newt Gingrich will win Florida with the support of the Evangelicals and their support of Family Values….  So what are Family Values?

The first thing I would think of would be marriage, and raising a family.  That would be a man and a woman raising their family according to their values.  Parents teaching their offspring about RIGHT and WRONG.  Like why it is WRONG to lie, steal, or hurt other people.  These are not just Family Values but, they are the kind of values that are needed to keep a society on the path to growth.  At one time Marriage was seen to be an institution that was for life, and divorce was frowned upon, and was seen as a liability to public office as the divorced politician considered to be someone who could not keep his family together.  Somewhere along the path to where we are divorce has gotten to be accepted, and a divorced politician is just looked upon as another person who failed at love.  Marriage, and the marriage oath, have lost some of the meaning they once had.

I look at New Gingrich, who is appealing to the Religious Conservative, and wonder what this all says about him.  He is in his THIRD marriage, the first two of which he cheated on with women he subsequently married.  So he had TWO wedding where he lied to God.  Is that something that we would want to teach our children?

Sure he says he as repented, and will be forgiven by God, or Jehovah, but, in the meantime, and thing about this, if he has lied to Jehovah twice what makes us believe he is NOT lying to US now.

For those of you who do NOT believe marriage is sacred he might be a great candidate for President, though you might not be able to tell when he is telling the truth but, for the rest, these little slips might just indicate that he is a poor example of Integrity.

For the chief executive of our country I would expect a certain amount of Integrity, and I don’t think we will find it in New Gingrich.
